Educational guide, updated 10 October 2026. This week’s gold news may encourage readers to open a chart, but a headline does not identify a trade location. One framework to practise is defining a price zone before assessing a breakout and retest. Examples here are hypothetical, not current XAUUSD signals.
Start with an area rather than a magic line
Support and resistance are useful as observation zones. A breakout moves beyond a zone; a retest revisits it afterwards. A fakeout briefly passes a boundary and then returns inside. IG Academy explains these basic distinctions and the possible change in support/resistance roles after a break.
Write down the zone’s range and timeframe first. Redefining it after price moves no longer evaluates the original plan. Avoid redrawing boundaries merely to make a completed trade look correct.
A breakout–retest observation checklist
- Context: record whether price is in a range or has a defined swing sequence.
- Zone: identify the area and why it was selected.
- Break: save the candle and timestamp rather than relying on memory.
- Return: record whether a retest occurs; not every break provides one.
- Invalidation: define what cancels the scenario before building a position simulation.

A simulation that can be reviewed later
Suppose a practice chart uses a hypothetical US$4,200–4,205 zone. Price moves above it, revisits it and responds. “The retest worked” is not a complete record: save the time, the candle observed and the previously defined invalidation condition.
These example prices are not verified market levels for this week. They illustrate record-keeping. A return inside the area calls for reassessment. If there is no retest, record that absence rather than changing the rules to chase the move.
Evaluation errors to avoid
- Saving successful screenshots and excluding failed scenarios.
- Changing timeframe after seeing the outcome without recording it.
- Treating many candles as independent opportunities.
- Assessing hypothetical profits without costs, spreads or exposure limits.
A useful practice set contains successes, failures and scenarios that never qualified. Check whether definitions were applied consistently before evaluating effectiveness. Otherwise, pattern claims may mainly reflect selection of favourable examples.
Connect technique with position size
The XAUUSD sizing walkthrough shows how stop distance changes hypothetical loss. Review the economic calendar to retain the timing context of chart observations.
